Tabula Rasa Definition
Tabula rasa, Latin for “scraped tablet,” names the classical idea that the mind begins as a clean slate. In Aristotle’s De Anima, the anima is not a finished product but a living capacity that takes on “form” through sensation, memory, and habit. Later, psychology would echo this insight, highlighting learning, environment, and neuroplasticity as powerful forces that shape identity. Human beings are not locked into fate or failure, but mens aperta, an open mind, written on by experientia and community.
At Tabula Rasa, we embrace this vision. Every client carries the God-given potential to change, to heal, and to inscribe a new story on the tablet of a life in progress.
The computer science “phenomenon.”
Tabula Rasa in Artificial Intelligence meaning
In artificial intelligence, Tabula Rasa describes autonomous agents that begin as a clean slate, with nihil scriptum, nothing written. These systems are equipped with mechanisms to sense, reason, and plan toward their goals, but they start with no built-in knowledge base about their environment. Through interaction, feedback, and learning, they gradually construct internal models of the world and refine their behavior. In practice, this means that performance, ethics, and risk all flow from what we choose to expose them to, the data we curate, and the constraints we enforce. At Tabula Rasa, we embrace this idea as a guiding metaphor for artificial intelligence. We design learning systems that begin from first principles, are trained on responsible data, and are governed by clear rules of accountability. Our aim is tabula rasa bene formata, a clean slate that is carefully and transparently shaped so that AI agents support human judgment, strengthen institutions, and avoid simply copying the worst patterns of the past.
